Churches

A DOZEN FAVORITE TOPICS FOR CHURCHES. Over the years, some of our topics have proved to be more popular than others.  Here is a list of the top twelve. (PP = PowerPoint)

Beauty: The Hallmark of God’s Creation (PP) This has been one of the most popular messages for Sunday morning worship services. God has placed within the heart of every person a sense of something eternal and a desire to understand the eternal significance of our actions. Learn how created beauty gives meaning to our existence and helps us see how everything fits together beautifully. Only God can create something that is both functional in an engineering sense and beautiful.

The God of Creation (No PP). This has also been one of the most popular messages for Sunday morning worship services. Paul, in his message on Mars Hill, was speaking to a pre-Christian society. We are now addressing a post-Christian society that shares many of the same questions about the Creator God. How can we convince people in a post-Christian world that God is the Creator? How can we demonstrate that God did not use evolution as His method of creation? How can we use the teaching of creation to lead people to Christ? How does creation prove that God has our best interests at heart?

Lightning: Illuminating God’s Majesty (PP) Few things evoke more fear in man than thunder and lightning. Are these fears exaggerated? Explore God’s numerous purposes for lightning. How should we respond spiritually to God’s lightning and thunder? Several science demonstrations can be included.

The Biblical Doctrine of Creation (PP) Sometimes I’m asked to convey a single message that explains what the Bible teaches about Creation clearly and logically, connecting the Bible and science from a young-earth creation perspective. The universe is the WHAT, the eternal Trinity is the WHO, the HOW is through the Word of God in six solar days, the WHEN is about 6 or 7 thousand years ago, and it ends with WHY did God create man?

The Moon: A Signpost from God (PP) My favorite for Sunday School, Evening Service, or Seminar. When I was in junior high, I was told a tall tale about where the moon came from. That sparked a lifelong fascination with various secular scientific theories that try to explain the moon’s origin. But what are these theories, and why do they all fall short? Why did God design the moon the way He did, and how does it show His wisdom and power? Join us as we explore the beauty, purpose, and divine craftsmanship of the moon, a celestial body that glorifies its Creator and lights our nights.

The Heavens Declare the Glory of God (PP) If you want more than just the Moon, this includes a shortened version of the Moon content, so it’s either/or. How do the heavens declare God’s glory? Three ways: through transcendence and awe, universal testimony, and order and design. The sun, moon, and stars are used as examples to illustrate each of these ways. Topics include how long it would take to reach the closest star, six problems with the secular fairy tale of the sun’s formation, and God’s purpose for the moon.

The Bible Said It First! (PP) A Sunday School favorite, but it could also work for an evening service. Scientific foreknowledge refers to scientific information revealed in the Bible long before humanity discovered or verified it through outside sources. Topics include the number of stars, the expansion of the universe, the suspension of the Earth, blood-sustaining life, and thermodynamics. The Bible is not a science textbook, but when it mentions science, it is always highly accurate. Includes several science demonstrations.

God’s Unseen Creation Revealed in Science (PP) This is our regular school program, but it also works well for Sunday School. Over 20-30 engaging science demonstrations showcase the hidden properties of light, water, or air, which can be described as the software that makes the hardware work. All ages enjoy this fast-paced program.

It’s a Young Earth After All! (PP) A seminar favorite.  One of the most confusing and divisive questions among Christians is, “How old is the Earth?” Many sincere Christians believe in an old Earth that is millions or billions of years old. However, the Bible teaches that the Earth is young, and scientific evidence supports this view, including natural processes on Earth and in the heavens. There is ample evidence for a young Earth if you know where to look. Radiometric dating methods, including carbon-14, will also be discussed.

The Universe’s Precision Design (PP) A Sunday School favorite. How does the Earth resemble a precision machine? What does the design of nature highlighted in Psalm 148 teach us about God and His creation? Subjects include the Earth’s energy balance and the solar system’s dynamic balance. Includes several science demonstrations.

Climate Change from a Christian Worldview (PP) This topic often comes up during Q&A sessions. People may feel scared and alarmed by the constant stream of bad news or dismiss all climate alarmism as “fake news.” Christians seek answers to key questions about global warming. How serious is it? What causes it? What, if anything, should we do about it from a Biblical Worldview? It includes some content from The Universe’s Precision Design, so this is an either/or as well. A few science demonstrations may be included.

Q&A about Science from a Biblical Worldview (No PP) Our experience has shown that church members often have questions about science stemming from what they hear or read.  The Q&A can take up a whole session if enough questions are submitted ahead of time, or it can follow a shorter message. I taught a university course on science and society issues and enjoy interacting with congregations.  The best approach is to submit written questions in advance.  After those are answered, questions will be taken from the floor, time permitting.
